Clematis paul farges rhs

Hem / Trädgård & Växter / Clematis paul farges rhs

Our easy (basic and basic-s) designs are strong enough, but the mediumstyle range allows for better development of the plant. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling. Like all clematis, it likes having its roots in the shade and its head in the sun, and being planted with the top of the roots 8cm underground.

Give it space to spread, ideally into trees or up against a large wall where it'll need close-spaced horizontal wires or trellis to snake through. Ideal for ground cover

Characteristics and Pruning

petiole (leaf tendril) climber, this clematis has an incredibly strong growth (up to 10 metres in height or more), and also exhibits a trailing (overhanging) habit. Foliage from May to October. When greening a taller facade, however, do away with hard pruning.

On planting, cut back to 20cm above ground, above a pair of buds. Seed heads are beautiful and fine and are the inspiration for this clematis' common name-- 'old man's beard.' Clematis vitalba belongs to 'pruning group 3' and must be cut down to 20 - 60 cm above the ground at the end of the year. Long-lasting abundance of flowers from June to September.

If you don't plan on pruning the plant regularly, the meshes can be even larger, as the main function of the trellis is to hold the trunk of the plant. Some have attractive fluffy seedheads in autumn

Horticultural Group
Vitalba Group clematis are deciduous woody climbers with termate or pinnate leaves and small, erect, usually single, flowers, produced on the current year's growth in late spring and summer to autumn

How to grow

Cultivation

Plant in a moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles at the base.

Instead, the focus should be on building up or maintaining the framework, which is shortened and thinned out every year.

Climbing Aids for the Facade

These clematis will need a trellis with a fine-meshed (30 - 50 cm) grid. Can be grown in containers at least 45cm (18in) deep and wide in a peat-free, loam-based potting compost.

See clematis cultivation for more advice

Propagation

Propagate by layering or semi-hardwood cuttings

Genus

Clematis can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs or herbaceous perennials, mostly climbing by twining leaf-stalks, and often with showy flowers.

Thereafter, give an early spring prune, again 20cm above ground. If your trellis is high, the heavy / massive design should be considered.
