The first of the three withdrawn vessels has already been sold.
The order withdrawal is the latest setback for Brodrene Aa, which had earlier announced plans to lay off staff due to delays in the delivery of new vessel.
After Norled canceled the order for the first ferry, Brodrene Aa reached an emergency financing agreement with its main creditor, Sparebank 1 bank, and two Norwegian companies, Fjord 1 and Rødne, to ensure that the company’s operations will continue until May 9, when a solution must be found to avoid layoffs.
Earlier, Norled terminated the contract for an earlier ordered ferry.
Norled “did not see any efforts by the shipyard to resolve the speed issues”.
This is the second time Norled has canceled an order.
Nyheter
It is a pity that this time the vessels did not achieve the necessary speed and were severely delayed.”

For months, the company worked to find a way to continue operations, but despite dialogue with the parties involved, no viable solution was found, leaving the company unable to manage the situation further.
The bankruptcy filing will be sent to Fjordane District Court, which will handle the case and appoint an administrator to manage the company.
While Norled remains committed to SHIFTR for other routes, such as Oslofjord, the Trondheim project failed due to delays and performance issues, not the battery system itself. This deadline has now been relaxed to May 16th.
Brodrene Aa is still searching for a solution to maintain its operations, and the withdrawal of the two newbuildings has certainly added insult to injury for the struggling shipyard.
It is worth noting that the shipyard had planned to equip the series of vessels with replaceable battery systems, although this was not required by the original shipbuilding contract.
Dette set verftet i ein krevjande situasjon.

Brødrene Aa will build three electric ferries for Norled
May 19, 2023
- AtB (Trøndelag’s mobility company) awarded tender contracts to Norled for three vessels starting in January 2024.
- Brødrene Aa will build the ferries, marking their largest single contract valued at NOK 420 million.
- Two ferries will operate the Trondheim-Kristiansund route, while the third will serve the Trondheim-Brekstad route on Ørlandet.
- The fast ferries will utilize the battery replacement solution SHIFTR, allowing for scheduled battery pack exchanges with fully charged ones.
- The SHIFTR system is a result of a Pilot-E development project led by Norled, involving Brødrene Aa.
- The exchange solution will be piloted on two existing Brødrene Aa-built boats, BARONEN and BARONESSEN, which will be converted to fully electric operation.
- This marks the first regular use of SHIFTR on a route, following the formal contract between Brødrene Aa, Norled, and the conversion of the two vessels.
Norled cancels order for three high-speed ferries at Brodrene Aa
Norwegian shipping company Norled has announced that it has canceled its order for two high-speed ferries ordered from the Norwegian shipyard Brodrene Aa.
Norled said the reasons for the cancellation were “delays in vessel delivery and issues with vessel performance”.
Gustav Johan Nydal, the company’s chairman, said the cancelation of the contracts for the two ferries was “expected”.
However, the shipowner has clarified that the contract was canceled due to delays in the delivery of the vessels and not for battery reasons.
Norled further stated, “They have previously delivered several vessels to us.
With this, all three new vessels ordered by the ferry operator at the Brodrene Aa shipyard have been canceled.
The new vessels were due to be delivered in 2024.
Brodrene Aa is understood to be looking for a new buyer for the second and third vessels, which are yet to be completed.
The board regrets the impact on its 170 employees, customers, and suppliers.
Norled cancelled the contracts with Brødrene Aa due to unresolved speed issues and significant delays to the three ferries TYRA, MAGNI and VÅR. TYRA has been completed, while MAGNI and VÅR only are partially completed.
Norled will now instead revert to diesel-powered vessels for its Trondheim routes, as the cancelled vessels were meant to use the SHIFTR battery-swapping system.
